Throughout our long, arduous, and incredibly rewarding entrepreneurial journey so far, there is one clear moment that we couldn’t be more thrilled to share: my husband Sean and I, Veba’s co-founders, had the honor of pitching our product to the Sharks! Our Shark Tank episode is set to air on ABC from 8:00-9:00 p.m. EST on Friday, April 5th!
So, before you tune in to watch, we are giving you a sneak peek at what it was like to enter the tank and face the world-famous, smashingly successful Sharks! So, keep reading to hear about our journey making it to Shark Tank season 15, including how it all started, what it was like in the tank, the ripple of emotions, and of course, how it all turned out for us. But no spoilers of course!
How It All Started
On an ordinary Tuesday, sitting in my office, I received the ping that started it all… Amidst the mass of emails, just so happened to be one from a Shark Tank producer! The email explained, they had learned about us from our participation in Techstars Atlanta and wanted us to audition for the show. After the shock, surprise, and thrill subsided, Sean and I knew it was time to get to work.
We began planning and filming our audition video for the Shark Tank casting, pouring our heart and soul into it just like we did when creating Veba. We hoped that this same passion exuded on screen, admittedly captured by a simple smartphone. We sent the audition, waited patiently to hear back, and were thrilled by the news: we were selected! But this is also when all of the work really starts. The delivery of our pitch would not only make or break our outcome but also the decision of whether our segment would even be featured on air.
Packing in the Prep
Anyone who has seen a few Shark Tank episodes knows, it’s not for the faint of heart. The sharks are there to listen to your pitch and get to the bottom of what you and your business are all about. That’s why we wanted to make it as entertaining and inspiring as it was informative. All to capture the sharks hearts with our story and the magic of Veba. And that meant a whole lot of preparation.
Our first step was to dive so deep into every aspect of our story and our business — especially the numbers. We had to be 100% sure that we were prepared for anything they asked and everything they threw at us. Of course, we had to plan for a few curve balls! So, after we spent a few long months getting up close and personal with our entrepreneurship journey, we flew to LA to start taping and face the sharks ourselves!
Time in the Tank
You know the feeling of butterflies in your stomach when you meet someone you really like? How about the anxiety of taking a really, really important test? Or the feeling of bursting pride when you look back and see how far you’ve come? Then you know a good chunk of what we were feeling when we stepped on the set of our Shark Tank episode taping, pushed through the double doors, and came face to face with the sharks.
We knew we had to keep a smile on while shaking with anxiety, excitement, thrill, and of course a bit of fear. We were begging and pleading with ourselves to not forget any important details and to nail. that. pitch.
As big fans of the show and each of the sharks, we were thrilled for the opportunity and over the moon about the honor to share our product with them, swim in their feedback, and request their support. All in all, it was truly a surreal experience — a manifestation of all of the hard work Veba has put in, and proof of how much further we still have to go.
After the Show
While we won’t reveal the outcome of our Shark Tank episode… of course, you’ll have to tune in on April 5th for that…. we can say for certain that the experience was one we will never forget and certainly one we don’t regret. It was a welcome challenge, a push in the right direction, and of course a dream come true.
The entire experience from start to finish was a great lesson in how important it is to know your business fully, deeply, and to believe in it with everything you’ve got! Looking back, it was as much a humbling experience as it was a confidence boost, and ultimately, the invaluable experience was worth every second!. And we are proud to say that Veba is doing better than ever!
